EMAG’s VL 8 vertical pickup turning machine suitable for large parts

EMAG has released the VL 8 vertical pickup turning machine for workpieces up to 400 mm dia. using a chuck with a diameter of 500 mm.

The machine’s base is made from MINERALIT® polymer concrete to help reduce vibration. The front of the base features a compound slide carrying the vertical main spindle that traverses the Z and X axes.

The 60-kW main spindle creates torque up to 1,220 Nm and speeds of up to 2,850 RPM. The machine’s turret accommodates 12 turning or, optionally, 12 driven drilling and milling tools.

Workpieces are loaded into the carrier prisms of a conveyor belt and positioned with an NC axis.

The pickup spindle collects the workpieces from the lateral conveyor belt and takes them to the machining area. A short travel distance helps create minimal chip-to-chip cutting times. It also is possible to link two machines with a component turnover station to create a production cell capable of machining the first and second sides of a workpiece in one cycle.

The integration of a Y axis in the turret allows for off-centre machining.
